Luftgau Finnland
Luftgau Finnland was one of the air district into which Luftwaffe was organized in order to administrate activities such as training, maintenance, air defense and recruitment. It operated within Finland, which allied itself with Germany during the Continuation War 1941-44 and offered Luftwaffe multiple airfields for Operation Barbarossa.
In 2019, a project was started to research the history of the airfields and the material culture left behind by the German soldiers. Research, which includes excavations, archival work and interviews, will continue across the coming years, culminating in an exhibition and the publication of results.
Advances in research can be followed on this website, along with events, field schools and other ways to be involved with the project.
